The summer may be winding down, but the temperatures here in South Florida sure aren’t! We all know how difficult it can be to deal with this sweltering heat. Well, your dog feels the same way! Here are some quick tips for beating the heat this summer with your pooch.

Tips to keep your dog safe in the summer heat:
- Exercise
- Food and Water
- Emergency plan
1. Exercise
Limit outdoor exercise on hot days. Be extremely careful if you intend to go on a longer walk, or avoid this altogether. Be attentive of the terrain you’re on and try to avoid asphalt. Plan out the time your pet will exercise; do so in the early morning or evenings only, if possible. Always make sure you have water available wherever your dog is exercising.
2. Food and Water
Looking for a creative way to cool down your pup? Try a doggie popsicle! Here are some great recipes you can try out. Be sure that if your dog is outside, she has plenty of fresh, cool water. In extreme heat, add some ice to your pup’s water bowl to help them stay cool. Keep in mind, if you’re going away on vacation and a petsitter is caring for your pets, make sure you provide these supplies and any other instructions necessary to set them up for success!
3. Emergency Plan
In the event of a bad storm or hurricane, do you have an action plan to keep your whole family safe – including your pets? Take an hour or two to ensure you know your emergency resources. Do you have a neighbor or friend who could assist with petcare if something happens at your home? There may be local resources available, including boarding centers, that you can consider while creating your emergency plan of action. Assign a trusted friend or petsitter access to your home in case you unexpectedly don’t make it back on time. Keep an emergency stock of pet food and water in case travel or delivery is limited.
